NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - A 1-year-old girl has died after she was shot while on a walk with her babysitter Thursday night in Central City.

The babysitter, an 18-year-old woman, was shot in the back, but police said she's expected to survive.

The child who was killed was identified as Londyn Samuels.

The shooting happened at about 8:20 p.m. near the intersection of South Saratoga Street and Washington Avenue.

"Our community rallies up every time something terrible and tragic like this happens, so please, if you know anything -- this happened at a time of the evening when there are people in the streets, there's people on the street -- call Crimestoppers," NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.

Serpas said they are searching for two men in connection with the case, but they haven't named a suspect.

They fled the scene on foot, Serpas said.

Witnesses told Eyewitness News reporter Tania Dall that a man fled the scene by climbing over a fence and jumping into a silver car.

That hasn't been confirmed by police.

Serpas said they don't know if the babysitter and the baby were the target.

"This is the time. This is when the people of New Orleans need to rally up, stand up and say, 'This is what happened.'

Give us the information.

Let us go make these people accountable for what they did," Serpas said.

The babysitter managed to get into a neighbor's house and call for help, according to witnesses.

Initial reports by the NOPD said the adult victim was the baby's mother, but they have since updated that information to say she was the child's babysitter.

She reportedly suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the back.

New Orleans Police Dept. Superintendent Ronal Serpas said authorities are searching for two men in connection with the shooting which took place around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

They have not named a suspect.

Serpas said the individuals fled the scene on foot.

Police say it is unclear whether the babysitter and the 1-year-old were the intended target, the station reports.

Witnesses say the babysitter managed to get into a neighbor's home and call for help, the station reports.

According to the station, the New Orleans Police Dept.

SWAT team is in the process of interviewing individuals who may have information related to the crime.

The investigation is ongoing.

Update: 

The New Orleans Police Department has released surveillance images of two persons of interest wanted for questioning in the killing of a 1-year-old girl Thursday night.

The two people have not been identified.

It's not clear whether they are the suspects who police say were seen fleeing the area after the shooting.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office has identified the child as Londyn Samuels.

NOPD says the shooting happened around 8:20 Thursday evening in the 2800 block of S. Saratoga, near Washington.

Officers say the woman babysitting Samuels was walking with her when they were shot.

Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the toddler died.

The woman is expected to survive a gunshot wound to her back.

Police have no word yet on a motive in the case or whether the woman was the target of the shooting.
