Story Below:
CHINATOWN, NEW YORK – A deranged man hacked his 23-year-old wife in the head with a meat cleaver on a Manhattan sidewalk Sunday, critically injuring her before firefighters came to her rescue.
Firefighter Jose Ortiz, 51, an 18-year FDNY veteran, witnessed the start of the attack from the open door of the Engine 9/Ladder 6 firehouse about 10:20 a.m.
Ortiz said the 28-year-old madman was dragging his wife along Canal St. by the arm as she protested.
When Ortiz approached the flailing pair, the attacker pulled a meat cleaver from his waistband, hacked his wife in the head, then swung the blade at the firefighter.
“He was not a big guy, only about 5-foot-5, but the cleaver made him a little taller,” Ortiz said.
Firefighters Shane Clarke, 33, and Jim Trainor, 30, ran to help Ortiz, and together they managed to subdue the attacker with the help of cops who they flagged down in a passing car.
“Besides the World Trade Center, this was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” Clarke said.
The hysterical victim, covered in blood, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical but stable condition, police said.
Her husband was taken into custody at the scene.
Charges were pending Sunday afternoon.
