A devoted mom’s dismembered body was discovered by a dog walker who spied her severed leg poking from a pile of garbage in the Bronx early Tuesday, police said.
Tanya Byrd’s butchered body parts had been stuffed into a duffel bag and three heavy-duty plastic garbage bags before someone dumped the grisly packages outside 509 Eagle Ave. in Melrose, police and sources said.
A witness told cops that the suspect fled into the pre-dawn darkness in a silver SUV after tossing the remains into a pile of garbage bags and discarded furniture.
Byrd, 52, was last seen Monday morning with a violent ex-boyfriend who had threatened to kill her in the past, according to her sister.
Some of the dead woman’s body parts were still in the clothes she was wearing at the time of her death, police sources said.
The victim’s head, hands, torso, legs and shoulder were all pulled from the trash, the sources said.
The body parts were found less than a half-mile from her Bronx home.
The dog walker spotted the leg protruding from the duffel bag about 5 a.m. Cops responded and quickly located three garbage bags with additional remains, police sources said.
Byrd’s sister, Cassandra McQueen, said the dead woman was last seen with a brutal former beau on the day before her remains were discovered.
“He has threatened her life,” McQueen told the Daily News. “He has threatened to kill her.
I told my sister to stay away from him, but she said he’s harmless and not to worry.”
The dead woman, a private nursing aide, has two adult children and a 7-year-old son, Nasyr, with Down syndrome.
She kicked the boyfriend out of her Bronx house about 18 months ago, the sister said.
“She’s a loving mother, very devoted to her son,” said McQueen. “That’s what she lived for. That’s her joy in life.”
A friend described Byrd as “a good person and a good mom.
No one gives her trouble.
She gives no one trouble.
She’s a quiet, hardworking woman.”
The dead woman apparently called in sick to work on Monday, and the friend said she last spoke to Byrd on Sunday.
NYPD investigators were scouring her second-floor apartment for clues in the death.
The victim’s remains were taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy and positive identification, police said.
